Major train derailment simulation planned near Waltloo depot

A major train derailment simulation will occur in Eersterust, with road closures to test and improve emergency preparedness.

Residents should take note of a major train derailment simulation in Eersterust.

Roads will be closed to test and improve emergency preparedness and response systems.

According to the Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson, Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, the joint simulation exercise of a train derailment will take place in Eersterust near the Waltloo Transnet Depot on the morning of 7 August 2024.

“The joint simulation exercise is aimed at testing the state of readiness and preparedness of emergency response systems and responders of the various entities, including those from the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department, Tshwane Metro Police Department, Transnet Freight Rail, South African Police Service, Gauteng Provincial Government Emergency Medical Services and others in case of a major incident.”

He said the exercise is also aimed at testing and improving measures to protect the community from health hazards and risks associated with such major incidents.

“The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department will continue to provide updates and issue further notices where necessary.”

Here are the streets that will be affected:

Stormvoël Road (M8) and other streets feeding it will be affected and closed between Petroleum Street and Boundary Drive.

“The public is hereby advised to take note of the simulation, cooperate, and avoid causing any panic on the day of the exercise.”

The simulation will start at 10:00 and end at 15:00.
