Tshwane writes off historical Hammanskraal water debt

MMC for Utilities Themba Fosi says residents can now look forward to a new era of clean water and financial relief.

The Tshwane metro has announced it will write off historic water debt for Hammanskraal residents.

This decision marks a pivotal moment for the community, offering them a chance to start afresh with new, potable tap water.

For over a decade, residents of Hammanskraal have endured the challenges of accessing water unsuitable for human consumption.

The long-awaited relief comes as part of a broader effort by the metro to address the area’s severe water supply issues and improve the overall quality of life for its residents.

MMC for Utilities, Regional Operations and Coordination Themba Fosi said the metro had to take decisive action to eliminate the financial burden of unpaid water bills that accrued while water supply was compromised.

Fosi said this debt write-off applies to households with audited water meters, allowing residents to begin anew without the weight of past financial obligations.

“This step is crucial for the residents who have been deprived of clean water for more than 18 years.

“It is a significant move towards justice for those who should not have to pay for water they did not receive,” said Fosi.

The debt relief announcement is coupled with significant investments in infrastructure and partnerships aimed at restoring a reliable and safe water supply.

Fosi mentioned that the metro is actively working on critical projects, including the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant and the Magalies Water Package Plant.

He said these initiatives are designed to provide interim solutions while Rooiwal undergoes essential upgrades.

“Progress on the Rooiwal plant is already underway, with key milestones such as the installation of security fencing and crucial mechanical repairs nearing completion.

“The metro is committed to accelerating these improvements to ensure timely delivery of clean water to residents.”

Tshwane has partnered with Magalies Water and other stakeholders to deliver potable water to Hammanskraal residents.

The partnership aims to bridge the gap until the new infrastructure is fully operational.

Fosi said an audit of 37 620 households has been conducted.

“Out of these, 23 616 water meters have been confirmed to be in good working order.

“However, approximately 14 004 meters are set to be replaced between September and November to ensure all residents can benefit from the new potable water supply.”

Fosi said residents of Hammanskraal can now look forward to a new era of clean water and financial relief.
