Williams gets three nominations for CAF awards

The joy over the nominations were however dampened when Sundowns suffered their first league defeat of the season at the hands of Polokwane City on Sunday.

In a week marked by contrasting fortunes, Mamelodi Sundowns have both celebrated individual accolades and faced a setback on the pitch.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently announced the nominees for the 2024 CAF Awards, with goalkeeper Ronwen Williams making headlines as he received nominations for Interclub Player of the Year, Player of the Year, and Goalkeeper of the Year.

These three nominations make him the most recognised player in this year’s awards.

The club men’s team has also been nominated for the prestigious Club of the Year award.

The CAF awards ceremony is set to take place on December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco, where Africa’s top talent will be celebrated for their outstanding contribution to the sport.

However, the jubilation surrounding Williams’ nominations was dampened by an unexpected defeat in the Betway Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Masandwana’s impressive winning streak came to an abrupt halt as they lost 1-0 to Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The match was tightly contested, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances in the first half.

Despite a few promising runs, including a powerful run into the box by Rushine De Reuck, the first stanza ended without goals.

The second half saw Bafana BaStyle push for opportunities, but the Polokwane City defence held firm.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 82nd minute when Polokwane City converted a free kick to seal the victory with a decisive goal.

In the last minutes of the match, the Brazilians searched for an equaliser, but were unable to breach their opponents’ defence, marking their first league defeat of the season.

The Brazilians have a chance to avenge this defeat next week in a return fixture against Polokwane City.

The Sundowns lineup included: Onyango, Lebusa, Coetzee, De Reuck, Tiwani, Allende, Maboe, Morena, Matthews, Rayners, and Mabena.

Substitutes: Pieterse, Mokoena, Sales, Kodisang, Mkhulise, Shalulile, Maema, Kekana, Mudau.
