The successful operation is aimed at combating criminal activities and enhancing public safety during the festive season.
The South African police service arrested 79 suspects in Mamelodi this weekend.
The arrests were made through an operation dubbed Festive Season, which started on Friday, November 22.
The suspects were arrested for various crimes during this high-density operation in Mamelodi West and East. The operation had stretched as far as the Sunnyside precinct.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said initiated and co-ordinated by Major-General Samuel Thine, the District Commissioner of Tshwane, the operation aimed to combat criminal activities and enhance public safety during the festive season.
He said the festive season operation is a crime-fighting operation and resulted in the arrest of 79 suspects for various offences.
“The operation focused on visible policing through increased patrols, stop-and-search initiatives, and the enforcement of liquor licence regulations,” said Van Dyk.
A total of 21 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting the finalisation of legal proceedings before deportation.
He further said 981 individuals and 250 vehicles were searched, along with 31 premises, including 21 liquor establishments.
Van Dyk said this resulted in nine illegal liquor outlets being closed and alcohol being confiscated for destruction following legal proceedings.
Among those arrested, 29 were for drinking in public, four for public indecency, 10 for possession of and dealing in drugs, one for possession of 340 illicit loose cigarettes, and another for possession of a dangerous weapon.
He further said six Aarto traffic violation notices were issued, amounting to fines totalling R3 500, with four persons being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Major-General Samuel Thine emphasised that disruptive crime prevention operations will remain a priority to ensure safer communities throughout the festive season.
