Four illegal businesses closed in Pretoria North

The shops were closed due to non-compliance to the city’s by-laws, for allegedly selling expired and counterfeit food.

A tavern and three spaza shops in Pretoria North were closed after being found non-compliant during an operation on November 23.
A multitask force consisting of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) in Region 1 Sector 2 worked in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders.

The operation aimed at ensuring adherence to local by-laws, with a focus on protecting public health from hazardous products, saw the closure of four businesses and the arrest of seven suspects for being in the country unlawfully.

During the operation, TMPD officials inspected numerous businesses, revealing alarming violations that posed risks to community safety.

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said it is alleged that the shops were also selling expired, counterfeit and repackaged food products.

Mahamba said these businesses have been under scrutiny due to their practices, which threaten the well-being of consumers and violate local regulations.

“The operation resulted in the issuance of Section 56 infringement notices totalling R40 500 to business owners found in violation of their licences.”

These small, informal retail outlets have been a source of concern within the community, as they often offer products that are not only expired but can also be harmful to consumers.

By shutting down these businesses, the TMPD aimed to deter other operators from engaging in similar illegal practices and encourage compliance with health and safety standards.

The TMPD has indicated that it will continue to conduct regular by-law enforcement operations to ensure that all businesses within the city comply with local regulations.
