Contact crime drops in West

Most police stations in the west of Pretoria have recorded decreases in contact crimes for the quarter from July 1 to September 30.

This was indicated in the crime statistics released by police minister Senzo Mchunu on November 25, which marks Mchunu’s administration’s first 100 days in office.

Atteridgeville police station was the only one which saw an uptick in contact crimes though partnering stations all reported decreases.

Brooklyn, Sunnyside and Akasia were among the Tshwane police precints in the top 30 worst affected by crime.

Atteridgeville

Atteridgeville saw a sharp increase in contact crime of 15.8%.

The leading cause of the spike was an 87.5% increase in common assault with 80 cases reported last quarter to 150 in this one.

Common robberies increased by six counts (25). Robberies with aggravating circumstances and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) cases increased by 3.2% (124 up to 128) and 9.2% (87 up to 95 cases) respectively.

Murder cases decreased by eight counts (14), sexual offences decreased by seven counts (28) and attempted murder decreased by 12 counts (6).

Rape cases reported decreased by 13 counts (20) and no attempted sexual offence has been reported in the past five quarters.

Sexual assault cases reported increased by five counts (7) and a single contact sexual offence was reported this quarter compared to none in the previous four.

Carjackings also saw a decrease of 10 counts (31) and robbery at non-residential premises decreased by two counts (17). Robbery at residential premises increased by 11 counts (19).

No Cash-in-transit (CIT) heist or bank robbery has been reported to the station in the past five quarters while one truck hijacking was reported in this and the past two quarters.

One arson case was reported this quarter compared to the two in the last and malicious damage to property cases increased by 3.7% (56).

Property-related crimes saw a decrease of 5.1% with burglary at non-residential premises decreasing by nine counts (19).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases reported decreased by 21 counts (15) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by 10 counts (42).

A single case of stock theft was reported compared to none in the previous four quarters and burglary at residential premises sharply increased by 77.5% (71).

All thefts not mentioned elsewhere increased by 1.9% (107). Shoplifting (53) and commercial crime (37) cases decreased by a single count whilst kidnapping cases reported increased significantly by 16 counts (25).

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 18.8% with the most notable increase coming from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI) which recorded a 37.7% increase this quarter (73).

Exactly nine cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition were detected in this quarter and the previous whilst drug-related crimes detected increased by 9.4% (139).

Four more counts of sexual offences detected by police were recorded this quarter compared to the two reported in the last.

Booysens

The Booysens police station saw a decrease of 20.2% in contact crimes this quarter as robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 34.4% (160).

Assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 23.3% (56) and common assault decreased by 11.0% (down to 97).

Attempted murder cases decreased by two counts (13) and common robbery increased by five counts (42).

Murder cases increased by seven counts (14) and sexual offences increased by one count (20).

Rape cases increased by six counts (18) and one attempted sexual offence was reported in this quarter compared to none in the last.

No contact sexual offences have been recorded in the past five quarters whilst six fewer sexual assault cases were reported in this one (1).

Carjackings reported decreased significantly by 31 counts (18) and robbery at residential cases decreased by 18 counts (39).

Robbery at non-residential premises decreased by 12 counts (24) and no truck hijackings were reported.

No CIT heists or bank robberies were reported in the past five quarters.

Malicious damage to property cases decreased by 44 counts (48) and no arson cases have been reported in the past four quarters.

Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by six counts (38) and burglary at residential premises decreased by 19 counts (41).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases reported increased by 9.9% (78) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by 15.9 (58).

Shoplifting cases decreased by nine counts (22) and commercial crime increased by 40.4% (80) while all theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 16.1% (213).

Community-reported serious crime decreased by 17.1% (down to 980) and kidnapping cases decreased by 21 counts (20).

Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased by 11.2% with 15.3% fewer DUI cases being detected this quarter (116).

No sexual offences were detected this quarter and the previous and one less case of drug-related offences was detected (37).

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by one count (13 to 14).

Hercules

Hercules police also recorded a decrease in contact crimes this quarter of 6.9% as assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 22.4% (59) and sexual offences decreased by five counts (11). Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 18.4% (down to 62).

Murder cases increased by one count (7) and attempted murders increased by two counts (14).

Common assault increased by 8.6% (101) and common robbery increased (29).

Rape cases decreased by two counts (6) and sexual assault cases decreased by three counts (4).

No attempted sexual offences have been reported in the past five quarters and a single case of contact sexual offence was reported in this quarter and the previous.

Carjackings increased by six counts (11) and truck hijackings increased by five counts compared to none reported last quarter.

Robbery at residential premises decreased by 13 counts (4) and robbery at non-residential premises decreased by two counts (7).

No CIT heists or bank robberies have been reported in the past five quarters.

Two arson cases were reported in this quarter and the previous and a single additional count of malicious property damage was recorded (60 to 61).

Other serious crimes increased by 35.3% (406) and community-reported serious crimes increased by 9.8% (954).

Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by 19 counts (17) and burglary at residential premises decreased by a single count (76 to 75).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases increased by 47.4% (56) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases increased by one count (52 to 53).

One case of stock theft was reported in this quarter and the previous as were three more cases of kidnapping (17).

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 2.0% as three more counts of DUI cases were detected this quarter (17 to 20).

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition cases detected increased by two counts (5) and drug-related crimes detected decreased by 3.7% (79).

No sexual offences have been detected by police in the past five quarters.

Pretoria West

Pretoria West Police Station also saw a slight decrease in contact crimes of 1.1% with common assault cases reported decreasing by 14.2% (103).

Murder cases decreased by two counts (6) and 31 common robberies were recorded in this quarter and the previous.

Sexual offences increased by four counts (29) and attempted murder cases increased by two counts (15).

Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 3.8% (55) and robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 3.1% (200).

Rape cases increased by seven cases (26) and sexual assault cases decreased by three counts (3).

No attempted sexual offences have been reported for the past five quarters and no contact sexual offence cases were reported in this quarter and the previous.

Carjackings reported increased by 26.7% (26) and robbery at non-residential premises increased by eight counts (24).

Robbery at residential premises decreased by nine counts (15) and non-CIT heists, bank robberies or truck hijackings have been reported in the past three quarters.

No arson cases were reported this quarter compared to the one reported in the previous and malicious damage to property cases increased by 5.1% (62).

Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by six counts (26) and burglary at residential premises increased by 41.3% (113).

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases reported decreased by 21.4% (55) and theft of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by 16.3% (77).

No stock thefts have been reported in the past five quarters and 25 kidnappings were reported compared to 24 last quarter.

Other serious crimes increased by 39.7% (345) with commercial crime increasing by 48.6% (107) and all theft not mentioned elsewhere increasing by 34.0% (213).

Shoplifting cases increased by nine counts (25) and community-reported crimes increased by 9.0% (1 117).

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 23.9% with 21 more DUI cases detected in this quarter compared to the previous (49).

Drug-related crimes detected increased by 14.0% (57) and a single sexual offence detected by police was recorded in this quarter and the previous.

Illegal possession of firearms cases decreased by seven counts with nine cases detected last quarter to two in this one.
