Noweto stations indicate increase in contact crimes
Loate, Soshanguve and Temba from the far north featured in the province’s top 30 most crime-riddled stations, with Temba in position 16 of the most reported crimes nationally.
Police stations in the Noweto region have shown an increase in reported contact crimes in the second quarterly crime stats released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for the 2024/25 financial year.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations for the period between July to September.
In the far north, contact crimes, which include murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts.
Loate, Soshanguve and Temba stations featured among the province’s 30 most crime-riddled stations with Temba in position 16 of the most reported crime nationally.
Soshanguve
Soshanguve SAPS also reported an increase in contact crimes at 4.6%, compared to the same period last year, with attempted murder cases increasing by three counts up to 11 reported cases.
Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 41.3% (75 cases up to 106) and cases of common assault decreased by 12.9% (178 to 155). Common robberies increased by three counts (now 43) and murder cases decreased by two counts (now 9) while sexual offences increased by nine (now 32).
Ten more rape cases (now 28) were reported this quarter.
Carjackings increased by five counts, where up to 22 cases were reported and robberies at residential premises increased by 10 counts to 23 reported cases.
Cases of motor vehicle and motorcycle theft increased by one count to a total of 12 reported cases.
Detected drug-related crimes decreased by 50% (65 to 98) and detected driving under the influence (DUI) cases increased by 73.5%.
Ga-Rankuwa
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 5.1% this quarter.
Murder counts decreased by five, with four cases being reported and sexual offences increased by one count as 25 cases were reported.
A total of 73 cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were reported and common assault cases decreased by 0.9% (from 115 to 114).
Common robberies increased by two counts up to 14 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 19.6% (92 cases down to 74).
Four rape cases and four cases of sexual offences were reported.
Carjackings decreased by several counts from 21 cases down to 14 and 12 robberies at residential premises took place, while six robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases increased by five counts (43 up to 48).
Twenty-four cases of burglaries at non-residential premises were recorded and there was a decrease of 20 counts of burglaries at residential premises at 37 cases.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by one count.
Police detected one count of illegal firearms and ammunition compared, to the five in the last quarter.
Mabopane
Mabopane Police Station reported an increase of 12.2% in contact crimes.
Robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 18.5% (108 up to 128 cases) and common assault cases decreased by 16.5% (133 to 155).
Assault with intent to cause GBH cases rose by 1.3% (81 to 82) and rape cases decreased by five counts up to 13 reported.
Three more counts of sexual assault were recorded this quarter, bringing the total to four.
Carjackings increased by eight counts to 37 cases and robberies at non-residential premises increased by two counts up to seven cases.
Robberies at non-residential premises increased by two counts up to seven.
Two counts of arson were reported and 64 malicious damage to property cases, a 16.4% increase from last year.
Burglaries at non-residential premises decreased by three counts of down to 17 cases and at residential properties, they decreased by 19.6% (107 to 86).
Cases of motor vehicle and motorcycle theft increased by eight counts to 11, and theft out of vehicles remained the same from the previous quarter.
Only 11 detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes were reported and 31 counts of DUI were recorded from the seven in the last quarter.
