Six arrested, one injured during ATM bombing, shootout in Centurion

About eight suspects fled the scene in a Quantum minibus. Police are appealing to members of the public to come forward with information.

One person was wounded, while eight suspects evaded arrest, during a shootout with police after an ATM bombing incident unfolded in Centurion in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the incident occurred around 02:15, at a Sasol garage on Old Johannesburg Road in Centurion.

Van Dyk said a group of about 14 men allegedly robbed the convenience store of cigarettes, soft drinks and chocolates.

“During the incident, an unknown number of suspects detonated an explosive device at the ATM at the garage.”

Van Dyk said the suspects fled the scene in different directions when police approached.

“Six suspects were apprehended, while approximately eight others escaped in a Quantum minibus,” Van Dyk said.

One suspect was injured after a shootout ensued.

Van Dyk said the injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

He said a thorough investigation is underway to trace and apprehend the remaining suspects.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) is appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.”
