Temba licensing official granted bail after trying to bribe investigators

The man was granted R1 000 bail after trying to bribe the officials with R50 000.

A 59-year-old licensing examiner from Temba Driving Licence Testing Centre in Hammanskraal was granted R1 000 bail after appearing in the Temba Magistrate’s Court on charges of bribery on December 2.

The suspect, who had been under investigation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) national traffic anti-corruption unit and the Hawks, was arrested following an alleged attempt to bribe investigators with R50 000.

The incident that led to the suspect’s arrest occurred after allegations surfaced regarding his involvement in the fraudulent issuing of driving licences at the Temba testing centre.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said the suspect offered the bribe to anti-corruption sleuths to stop the investigation in an attempt to avoid legal consequences.

Zwane said the investigators, acting under an entrapment order, arranged a meeting with the suspect at a nearby shopping mall.

“During the meeting, the suspect approached the investigators with a white bag containing the money, which he placed inside their vehicle, claiming that the cash was divided into two stacks.

“The investigators immediately arrested him on the spot, and he was detained at the Temba police station,” said Zwane.

“The investigations into the allegations of corruption at the Temba testing centre is ongoing and the suspect will return to court soon.”
