One of the suspects was out on bail for murdering a police officer.
Three suspects were arrested for armed robbery in Bronkhorstspruit Region 7 on Tuesday.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) members were responding to a complaint from community members about five suspects driving a dark grey Mercedez-Benz around the community and robbing people at gunpoint.
TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the latest robbery was reported at the R568.
He said the police swiftly responded to the call and managed to trace the suspects at the Zithobeni area near the R515.
“When the suspects noticed the police vehicle, they opened fire. Officers returned fire and a chase ensued between the officers and the suspects.
“The suspects’ vehicle continued to drive recklessly, endangering oncoming traffic and bumping into other vehicles. During the pursuit, the suspects’ vehicle wheel was punctured near a graveyard and five suspects fled on foot into the graveyard,” said Mahamba.
He said the officers managed to apprehend three suspects while two are still at large.
The officers recovered a firearm and ammunition.
The three suspects are facing attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition charges.
“While the officers were processing the suspects, it was discovered that the Mercedes-Benz was reported to be highjacked.
“It was also discovered that one of the suspects was out on bail for murdering a police officer.”
Mahamba said the suspects will appear in court soon.
Community members are encouraged to contact the nearest police services or the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096 to report any illegal activities.
