Community gathers for anti-drug awareness event with Gig Truck

The 16 Days of Activism are observed every year from November 25 to December 10.

Performance Improvement Child and Youth Care Centre manager Grace Keetile said the core objectives of the event included ensuring that youth and community members knew where to turn to for assistance when battling substance abuse.

Keetile said despite some initial challenges due to limited resources, a mobile awareness unit broadcasted key messages about the dangers of substance abuse loudly and clearly.

“Its presence symbolised the community’s commitment to keeping residents informed and safe.

“The Gig Truck was a key feature, drawing and reminding everyone that help is available when they need it,” she said.

With the help of social workers and recovering users, who shared their inspiring stories, the event provided a strong message of hope and support.

Keetile said participants had the opportunity not only to hear impactful stories of recovery but also to engage in fun activities.

“Attendees appreciated the balance of informative sessions and entertainment, making it a memorable day for all.

“Sponsors from local businesses, including donations of water, played a crucial role in ensuring the event’s success. Their support helped demonstrate the importance of building strong community relationships to fight the scourge of drug abuse.”

She said the 16 Days of Activism was important for all people in the area.

“During these 16 days, we must ensure that all genders are protected from substance abuse and violence.”
