Police educate Mams hostel dwellers on GBV following string of new complaints
Officers distributed hundreds of pamphlets on safety tips against GBV, breaking the silence and where to report it as hostels were recently uncovered as a hotspot for contact crimes in Mamelodi.
Mamelodi hostel dwellers were encouraged by law enforcement agencies to break the silence and to report GBV.
This follows after Mamelodi police, together with the youth, CPF, GBV brigades, the Department of Social Development, and the Moses Mabhida Foundation, went on a door-to-door campaign on Wednesday to speak to hostel dwellers about the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
The 16 Days of Activism are observed countrywide every year from November 25 to December 10.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila, said officers distributed hundreds of pamphlets on safety tips against GBV, breaking the silence and where to report it.
She said this initiative was to mark the 16 Days of Activism and safety plans for the festive season.
“We spoke directly to the hostel dwellers,” said Maila.
Maila said police interacted with hostel residents about these crimes, because of a string of complaints of GBV allegedly arising from the hostel blocks.
She said hostels were recently uncovered as a hotspot for contact crimes in Mamelodi, especially common assault and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm – even using stones and bricks to hit each other.
Maila implored the community to stand up against GBV and emphatically told them to report such cases.
The door-to-door campaign proceeded to Denlyn Mall, where pamphlets on different kinds of abuse, breaking the silence on domestic violence and sexual abuse, a safer festive season, tips on trio crimes (carjackings, house and business robberies) and human trafficking were handed out.
Maila assured shoppers and the general community of Mamelodi that police would be more visible at malls this festive seas.
She encouraged residents and especially shoppers to keep safe and not to fall victim to crime this festive season.
