Pretoria East Hospital declared safe after fire

A fire at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital was contained, and the building has been declared safe, with everyone returning to evacuated areas.

A fire at the Netcare Pretoria East Hospital was swiftly contained on Thursday evening, allowing patients, staff, and doctors to safely return to evacuated areas after the building was declared secure.

Hundreds of patients and staff members were evacuated after a fire was reported on Thursday evening at around 18:00.

According to Netcare spokesperson Lynne O’Connor, the fire was brought under control thanks to swift action by the Tshwane Fire Department, hospital staff, and several emergency medical services providers.

“Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our patients, healthcare workers and visitors is always our primary concern. Netcare 911 paramedics, hospital staff members, and several other emergency service providers ensured that all patients were evacuated.

“We are pleased to confirm that the fire department has declared the building safe and that patients, doctors and staff members have now been moved back to the evacuated areas.

She said on behalf of Netcare Pretoria East Hospital and the Netcare Group, they sincerely appreciate the assistance of the fire department and the superb support from all emergency medical services colleagues.

“The cause of the fire is being investigated, and the extent of the damage will need to be evaluated. We are grateful that the fire was contained and sincerely apologise to the affected patients and their families for the inconvenience,” concluded O’Connor.
