Innovative teachers honoured
Teachers and principals recently received awards for their innovation when it comes to teaching and moulding learners.
The Solidarity Schools Support Centre (SOS) hosted its annual Onnieveerder Awards Ceremony recently, where teachers and principals were recognised for their dedication to influencing learners in the classroom.
According to the operations co-ordinator at SOS, Alida van Rooyen the awards are hosted annually, with category selection unfolding according to best practices.
“The winners were selected based on the motivations they submitted to a panel of judges, according to the criteria stipulated for each nominee,” she explained.

Van Rooyen also mentioned that plans are underway to expand the award categories in future years, highlighting the importance of ongoing innovation in education.
“An Onnieveerder is a teacher who stands at the forefront of educational innovation.”
She said the Onnieveerder campaign focuses on recognising teachers and principals who nurture innovative educators.
“The campaign awards teachers in four specific categories, while also acknowledging the Most Innovative Principal of the Year, who fosters such talent.”
SOS spokesperson Sarina Prinsloo said a teacher from Laer Meisieskool La Rochelle, Lalindei Botha, was honoured as the Onnieveerder of 2024.
“Botha’s energetic and innovative teaching style has been instrumental in improving academic outcomes and strengthening learners’ critical and creative thinking skills.”

During the ceremony, Botha said receiving the award was an honour.
“I am grateful to be a teacher and excited to continue my mission of inspiring learners to become curious, creative, and confident adults,” said Botha.
Prinsloo said the principal of Laerskool Hennopspark was recognised as the Most Innovative Principal of 2024.
She said under principal Jannie Raath’s leadership, the school has fostered a culture of innovation.
“I am proud to be part of a school community that embraces innovation and works together to prepare learners for the future,” said Raath during his acceptance speech.
“This recognition is dedicated to my teaching team, who walk this journey with me every day.”

Head of Innovation at the SOS, Valentyn van der Merwe said Botha and Raath embody the future of education where creativity meets purpose.
“Their work not only transforms learning experiences for their learners but also redefines what is possible in the field of education.”
He emphasised the importance of forward-thinking educators in transforming the educational landscape.
“The SOS proudly celebrates each winner as a role model in education, honouring their invaluable contributions to cultivating a culture of innovation and excellence.”
