Mohwelere Road free of potholes
The problem of potholes was there for quite some time, and every day the situation was getting worse as the potholes were growing bigger and bigger, says one resident.
Mohwelere Road in Mamelodi East Ext 6, which used to frustrate community members, motorists and taxi drivers, is now a route free of potholes.
The road is a main road into the Ext 6 area and taxi drivers had previously refused to transport passengers using the road as the route was riddled with damaging potholes.
In the past, residents complained that the potholes on the road were so big that they damaged vehicles and caused flat tyres.
One of the taxi drivers, Jack Thobane, said they used to fight with their passengers because no one wanted to drive onto Mohwelere Road. “After all, the road damages a lot of things on our taxis.”
The nightmare however is finally over, and everyone is looking forward to driving there now.
Today, we are driving smoothly on Mohwelere Road because the Tshwane metro finally fixed the road.
“The road had so many potholes and was always flooded with rain and water coming from nearby car washes in the area,” said Thobane.
“We are all happy today, from passengers to motorists and taxi drivers. No more complaining about buying car parts and no more getting off from Solomon Mahlangu Road and onto Mohwelere Road,” added Thobane.
In the past, many taxi drivers, including motorists, refused to drive onto the road and have resorted to taking alternative routes.
A resident from Ext 6, Thandiwe Matseke said, “We used to pay the full amount of the taxi fare but did not reach our destination”.
She said the taxi drivers “were not to be blamed, but they also needed to understand our frustration then, because we arrived late for work but paid the full amount”.
In the afternoon the taxi drivers dropped us off 100m away from our homes but were demanding the full amount of taxi fare.
The problem of potholes was there for quite some time, and every day the situation was getting worse as the potholes were growing bigger and bigger,” she said.
Matseke added that motorists and taxi drivers used to pay volunteers to fix potholes in the area, but the potholes were now big, and they could not close them anymore.
Ward 40 councillor Moloke Makola said it took years to fix Mohwelere Road, but that it’s everyone’s responsibility to take care of the street.
“Finally, the street is smooth and all potholes are covered.
“The newly renovated street has a drainage system on the side that guides the water flow, and we are pleading with the community not to litter in the drainage system but to always keep it clean at all times.”
