East forum tackles potholes
The potholes had grown over time due to heavy rains and inadequate maintenance and the routes were a headache for many residents.
Motorists in the east of Pretoria have been brought some relief after long-standing potholes which had been plaguing the community have been repaired.
The potholes on the corner of Hesketh and De Villebois, Jacques and De Villebois, Paul and Bolo, Wekker and Paul streets as well as Frhensch Street have been repaired.
The potholes had been a concern over time, widening and deepening due to rains, while maintenance was not taking place.
The routes had turned into a headache for many residents who cited damage to vehicles and tyres.
Founding director of the Pretoria East Community Care Forum, Deirdré van Helsdingen said the streets had many potholes, some cracked.
“We managed to fix all the potholes and the cracks before they became bigger.”
According to the CCF, the initiative was in response to the deteriorating road conditions in the east areas.
The large backlog of unrepaired potholes in the city has sparked a hands-on approach among residents, as they resort to filling these holes themselves as part of the community upliftment precinct (Cup) initiative.
“Filling of potholes other than by the municipality was considered illegal, however now with the new Cup initiative, registered residents and organisations can now fill them.
However, we do welcome and encourage all communities in our city to be part of our project that seeks to make our city work for all its residents. It is only through working together that we can achieve our collective goal of building a capital city that we can all be proud of.”
Van Helsdingen said the CCF will continue to address service delivery issues such as smaller potholes, clean-ups, cutting trees and unclogging water drains.
She said they will wrap up their cleaning and beautifying work in the suburbs in the east of Pretoria on Thursday, December 12 with the clean-up of Rubenstein Drive.
“We will continue work next year where we will start with a bang to even do more for the community.”
