Local NGOs bring Christmas cheer to Central homeless residents

Two foundations came together to host a Christmas donation drive for about 300 homeless beneficiaries.

Local organisations led by the Waratwa Foundation and Blazetopix Foundation recently led a Christmas donation drive for about 300 homeless beneficiaries in the CBD.

The event occurred on December 7, at Nelson Mandela Drive, Edmonton Street, Pretoria Central.

This is the NGOs’ third drive as they also held two earlier this year.

The partners distributed food, clothes, and sanitary pads and even offered free haircuts to the homeless once again.

Waratwa Foundation founder Oratile Motsusi said that while the event was largely successful, there were some challenges and areas identified for improvement.

“There is a need for stronger leadership and assigned leaders for each section to maintain order and ensure smooth execution. Planning and co-ordination to minimise hiccups and delays also have to improve.

The event was made possible by the efforts of about 20 volunteers, who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth execution of the event,” Motsusi said.

He said they enjoy providing essential services and support to homeless individuals in Pretoria.

“We are grateful for the support of our sponsors and volunteers, and we look forward to building on this success in future events,” said Motsusi.

The event offered a range of services and activities, including:

– A feeding scheme section, providing samp, beans, soup, bread, fruit, juice and water.

– A clothing donation section, where attendees could select items they needed.

– A Shout-It-Now mobile testing clinic, offering voluntary HIV testing and counselling services.

– A barber shop service, providing haircuts to attendees.

– Distribution of sanitary towels, toothpaste and hand lotion.

In February, the Waratwa Foundation visited the Halaletsang Child and Youth Care Centre in Atteridgeville, where it donated clothes, shoes, sanitary pads and groceries.
