Ward 59 residents unite for safer streets
Almost hundred percent of the streets has repaired and functional streetlights.
Groenkloof Ward 59 has achieved a remarkable milestone after illumination difficulties on various routes in the past five years.
Residents and multiple donors repaired and fixed broken and vandalised streetlights in the neighbourhood recently.
Councillor Shaun Wilkinson said parts of the ward are now brighter and hopefully safer thanks to this remarkable collective funding effort by residents and stakeholders.
“We’ve worked tirelessly to overcome challenges faced by our community,” said Wilkinson.
“Broken poles, electricity issues, and ageing infrastructure were our top concerns.”
He said various donors contributed to the repair and replacement of streetlights, with private contractors working within budget.
“Lights were installed and the lamp lines, poles, and control boxes in the area were fixed and made operational,” he said.
Wilkinson stated that almost 100% of the ward is now fixed, with minor adjustments remaining.
He added that the residents association aims to restart the project, expanding lighting to every corner of the community.
Wilkinson hopes that this initiative will create a safer and more welcoming space for families and friends to gather their belongings as they exit the park after sunset.
He added that this milestone project highlights the power of unity and determination in overcoming challenges and improving the shared spaces of the community.
“While much has been accomplished, the work isn’t over,” he said.
“Hopefully the Residents Association can restart the project soon and continue to build on this initial success and bring light to every corner of the affected community.”
