Devastating blaze consumes east restaurant

No injuries were reported and fortunately, animals at a pet shop next door were protected.

Die Poskantoor Restaurant in Constantia Park was completely gutted by a fire on Sunday morning, December 15.

According to Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni, firefighters responded swiftly to the incident, dispatching firefighting resources from nearby stations, including Hazelwood, Erasmuskloof and Silverton.

Mnguni said firefighters arrived at the scene at 03:57 and found the building fully engulfed in flames.

“They immediately began with firefighting operations, which also included protecting other nearby exposed structures and ensuring that everyone was accounted for,” said Mnguni.

He added that despite the intense heat, the firefighters successfully protected nearby structures and ensured everyone’s safety, including animals in a nearby pet shop.

“Animals in a pet shop were safely protected during the operations, and the shopping centre also remained unaffected by the intense heat of the fire due to the efforts made by the firefighters.

“The shopping centre nearby also remained unaffected due to the firefighters’ efforts.”

Mnguni said the fire was brought under control and fully extinguished by 05:55, with no reported injuries.

He said that the SAPS and private safety organisations were also on the scene.

“The cause of the fire remains undetermined.”

Mnguni urged residents to remain calm, speak clearly, and give the correct address and contact number to allow the operator to phone them back.
