Fundraiser to aid home a success

A home for quadriplegics in Mayville held a fundraising event on Saturday to help get the centre back on its feet.
Lat Wiel Self Help Centre for Quadriplegics desperately needs funds to keep the home running, paying for services as well as their care workers.
The event was a success, all thanks to Ms South Africa Deaf’s second runner-up, Marle Lubbe and Annalize Biela from Linga Longa Promotions for organising food, donations, and singers to come and perform for the residents.
Mara le Roux, case manager at the home, said it is calling on residents for assistance with donations, their time, and kindness.
She said the home was founded in 1983, and even former President Nelson Mandela donated to the structure of the home.
“The home is housing 13 quadriplegics and 17 care workers and desperately needs funds to help run the centre,” said Le Roux.
The home is run by the residents, who are all quadriplegics and helpers.
Le Roux said the residents keep themselves busy by painting, studying, using the computer, doing puzzles, making cards, reading, watching TV, and the daily run of the home and staff.
“We have amazing residents who have painted beautiful paintings only using their mouths,” said Le Roux.
She said for the past four years, the home has direly needed help to pay for water and electricity.
“Our water and electricity bills are very high, and some of the money will be used to pay for these services.
“Our dedicated staff are basically the arms and feet of our quads, and their duties range from bathing, dressing, and feeding, cleaning, cooking, and daily personal hygiene,” she said.
“Without our staff, we cannot move forward, as they are the backbone of the home,” she added.
She appealed to the public and companies to help generate funds to pay their staff better salaries and keep the home running.
