Newlands reservoir completion set for March 2025
A second reservoir is being built to deal with the growing water demands in the area.
The Parkmore Low-Level Reservoir in Newlands is expected to be finished by March next year.
Construction began in June 2023 to deal with the growing water demand in the area.
Ward 83 councillor Andrew Lesch said in the past the existing reservoir would run dry, leaving residents without water for days.
“What prompted the construction of a second reservoir is to have enough water resources and more capacity in the area,” explained Lesch.
“Now the case of the reservoir running dry would be far less because we will have enough water resources.”
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the new reservoir has a capacity of 10 million litres.
He said it is designed to alleviate water shortages in Pretoria east, which is experiencing rapid development.
According to Mashigo, the project’s budget for the 2024/25 financial year was initially set at about R35.6-million but it was reduced to R29.5-million through the budget adjustment process.
“The expected completion date is March 3, 2025.”
However, Mashigo noted that the late delivery of valves for the new control room poses a potential risk to meeting the completion deadline on time.
He added that the progress of the project currently stands at 68%.
“The concrete for the third lift of the reservoir wall and supporting columns is expected to be cast before the 2024 builder’s break,” said Mashigo.
“The fourth and final lift is scheduled for completion by mid-February 2025.”
Mashigo said the construction of the Parkmore LL Reservoir is crucial in meeting the rapid increase in domestic and commercial water demand in the region, particularly in the high-density developments taking place in the Menlyn node.
He stated that Pretoria east is currently ranked as one of the fastest-developing areas in Gauteng, and the new reservoir will significantly enhance water security for residents and businesses.
“With the project nearing completion, residents can look forward to a more reliable water supply and pressure.”
