Alleged scammer to appear in court for R296k fraud case

The suspect was arrested on December 6 for a fraud case dating back to 2018.

A 41-year-old man is expected to appear at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court on December 17 for a bail hearing in connection with a fraud case dating back to 2018.

Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said the allegations against Musa Kache Chungupengu (41) stem from an incident in April 2018 where a complainant was deceived into believing they were dealing with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Pretoria.

“A complainant received an email purportedly from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Pretoria, requesting the supply of 200 boxes of Pure Azoxy Pesticide.”

He said the complainant was quoted R296 000 by a supplier, San Marino Trading, based in the Eastern Cape.

“After transferring the funds to the provided account, the items were never delivered.”

“Chungupengu was apprehended at the Golela border gate in KwaZulu-Natal on December 6 and initially detained at the Pongola Police Station,” he said.

Ramovha said Chungupengu was later transferred to Gauteng, where he appeared before the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria on December 9.

The case was then postponed to December 17 for a bail hearing.
