Top goalkeeper makes history with CAF Award
The 32-year-old Ronwen Williams scooped two accolades, including the Men’s Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year at the prestigious awards.
Bafana Bafana and Tshwane giants’ number one goalminder Ronwen Williams made history as he won Africa’s Goalkeeper of the Year and the Interclub Player of the Year awards.
The Mamelodi Sundowns’ shot-stopper, Williams, was the centre of attraction at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday evening.
He became the first South African to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award. He also becomes the second Premier Soccer League (PSL) player, after his teammate, Denis Onyango, to scoop the Interclub Player of the Year.

Williams has had one stellar year, having guided Mamelodi Sundowns to the 2023/24 CAF Champions League semi-finals.
He guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze finish in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and helped the Brazilians lift their seventh consecutive league silverware in the 2023/24 season.
As he received the two accolades, Williams gave thanks to his family, teammates and coaches for their support throughout his career.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, my parents, my two siblings, my partner as well as my kids for being supportive throughout my career. Thank you so much to CAF for this recognition.”
Williams said it has been an amazing year for him but he couldn’t have done it alone.
“Thank you to all the players, coaches and technical staff that have been with me throughout my career. I know this win will inspire millions and millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, to push boundaries and never forget your dreams are valid,” the Gqeberha-born player said.
These awards are a true reflection of Williams’ hard work as well as the performances he displayed for both Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
He aims to lead Sundowns to triumph in the Caf Champions League and hopes to earn silverware at the club level.
Williams also has his sights set on the 2025 African Cup of Nations finals, which will take place in Morocco.
His goal is to guide Bafana Bafana to victory in the continental tournament, further solidifying his legacy as one of South Africa’s finest goalkeepers.
