Keep yourself and your loved ones safe this December
Stay one step ahead of criminals this festive season with these essential safety tips from police.
Police have warned the public to be aware of their surroundings at all times this festive season as crime tends to increase during the period.
It is essential to be crime-conscious and take the necessary precautions to ensure your personal safety.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Facebook page, being aware of your surroundings is key to preventing crime.
“Never walk around alone and don’t talk to strangers,” advised the SAPS.
“Be on the lookout for strange cars or people and walk in well-lit, busy streets and in a group, if possible.”
The post also states that security is also crucial, especially during the festive season when many residents are away on holiday.
“Make sure your home is secure and become a member of an armed response service,” advised police.
“Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers or have them displayed in an accessible area.”
According to police, it is essential to let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone.
However, be cautious when sharing your plans on social media.
“Criminals also have access to Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter), so think twice before advertising your impending absence,” warned the SAPS.
Other safety tips include knowing all emergency numbers, trusting your instincts and avoiding displaying valuables where criminals can see them.
“Avoid going into a congested street where you cannot even walk properly; that is where you will find criminals pickpocketing,” advised police.
They also urged locals to be aware of their surroundings and not get distracted by being on their phone – when walking, driving – and keeping a close eye on their children.
“Be present while in public spaces,” warned police.
“It only takes a distracted moment for a mobile phone, wallet, bag or child to be snatched away.”
