Operation Shanela nets 308 suspects in weekend operation
Law enforcement continued its zero tolerance on crime in Tshwane with multidisciplinary crime-combatting reaction teams.
More than 300 suspects were arrested for various crimes during several operations carried out in Temba, Hammanskraal in the north of Pretoria this weekend.
The operations focused on high-crime areas and included patrols, compliance inspections and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.
Crimes ranged from stolen vehicles, possession of unlicensed firearms, assault, housebreaking, public drinking and armed robbery.
The police executed the operation with the help of stakeholders including Home Affairs, Labour, Gauteng Traffic and Tshwane Metro Police departments, CPFs, crime prevention wardens and elected councillors.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the operation entailed high-visibility patrols at crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets.
Van Dyk said the activities included patrols in high-crime areas, compliance inspections and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.
“A total of 246 individuals were arrested for offences such as assault, housebreaking, public drinking, driving under the influence of alcohol, and armed robbery.
“One suspect was arrested for murder, four for attempted murder, one for armed robbery, four for rape, and 88 for gender-based violence,” said Van Dyk.
He said 23 undocumented individuals were detained, pending legal proceedings.
“Should they be found in violation of immigration laws, deportation procedures will be initiated.”
The team inspected 25 liquor premises and found eight of the liquor outlets to be non-compliant with the Liquor Act.
“Liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” said Van Dyk.
Almost 3 000 individuals were searched and 1 087 vehicles were checked to make certain that they were not stolen.
