Severe weather alert: Level 5 rain warning issued for Pretoria

A Level 5 rain warning has been issued for Pretoria, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a high-level 5 warning for disruptive rain in Pretoria on Monday.

According to SAWS, heavy rains are expected to cause severe flooding in both formal and informal settlements, with major roads likely to be submerged or closed.

This could result in traffic disruptions across the city and may leave some communities temporarily cut off from essential services.

The heavy rainfall is forecast to cause flash floods in vulnerable areas, particularly along fast-flowing streams and rivers.

SAWS has warned of potential mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion, which could further jeopardize the safety of residents, especially those living in mud-based or makeshift structures.

Residents are strongly advised to stay indoors and off the roads, as these conditions pose significant dangers to life and property.

“Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams, especially where the water level is above your ankles,” SAWS urges.

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.”

Key safety tips:

  • Move to higher ground if flooding occurs, and do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects, as they may attract lightning.
  • Avoid crossing flooded roads or driving through fast-moving water, which could sweep vehicles away.
  • In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.
  • Do not engage in outdoor activities like fishing or golf, as both fishing rods and golf clubs are good conductors of electricity during thunderstorms.
