Lynnwood Ridge homeowner kills robbery suspect

A suspect believed to be a house robber was arrested, while his accomplice was shot and killed by a homeowner in Lynnwood Ridge on December 7.

According to Aris Ruyter, chairperson of the Alpha Security Forum and Garsfontein CPF, they received a call about a man breaking into a house in Bouvardia Avenue at around 14:00, and different security companies and police responded.

The Moreleta Spruit is next to the street.

Ruyter said on arrival, a suspect was arrested on the premises.

“He was found with balaclavas, bolt cutters, a syringe and gloves.”

Ruyter said later, at around 17:00, as the homeowner was fixing a broken window, a second suspect jumped out and attacked the owner.

“He was repairing the burglar bars when the second suspect climbed out of a dishwasher and attacked him with a four-pound hammer.

“The suspect hit the homeowner twice with a hammer.”

During the ordeal the homeowner allegedly managed to fire a shot at the suspect, which fatally wounded him.

He added that at this stage, they are not sure whose firearm it was, but police are investigating.

“The homeowner was taken to the hospital and is recovering.”

According to VEMRU spokesperson Casper Visser, on arrival, they found that while the homeowner’s family was busy fixing the damage, a second suspect came out of the house and attacked a family member.

“The family member managed to defend himself despite being seriously injured due to a hit over the head with a hammer and shot the suspect, who passed away on the scene.”

Police did not comment at the time of publishing.
