Rain expected until next week: Here is how to keep your pets safe and dry during wet weather
Here are some tips from Pretoria shelters to keep your pets secure and their homes dry during wet weather.
Pretoria residents can expect possible rain until next week, according to the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
Forecaster Lethlohonolo Thobela warned that on-and-off showers and thundershowers will persist throughout the week until next Monday.
While the rain brings relief to communities, it also poses risks to residents and their pets.

Wollies Animal Shelter has been affected by the rain, leaving them in dire need of dry blankets for the animals.
According to manager Celia Trexler, they urgently need old blankets or anything they can use for the animals in the kennels.
“We are grateful for the rain, especially for the animals, but unfortunately, it has left us in need,” she said.
She said they couldn’t seem to get the piles of blankets dry.
“We urgently require old blankets or anything we can use for the animals in the kennels.
“I understand that some people may offer to wash them at home. Thank you, but unfortunately, they are so full of sand that it could damage your own washing machines.”

Trexler advised that elevating dog kennels has saved the dogs from the rain and urged pet owners to do the same.
“They can also lift the kennels with bricks. That’s the cheapest way to do it,” she added.
Owner of Soshanguve Animal Shelter, Teboho Ramedi, shared tips for pet owners to keep their pets safe during rainfalls:
– Elevate dog houses to ensure they are above ground level.
– Use pallets to build dog houses, allowing water to flow underneath.
– Keep pets contained within the yard during rain to avoid injury or being stranded or running away.
– Elevate water and food bowls to prevent mixing with rainwater.
As the rain continues, residents are urged to be prepared and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the well-being of their pets.
