Tshwane commits to fixing flood-damaged road in Centurion
A section of the road has been washed away. Repairs are expected to take about two weeks to complete.
The Tshwane metro has announced its plans to initiate repairs to road damage at the intersection of End, John Voster, and Rabie streets in Centurion following significant flooding in December.
According to Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, a visual inspection of the low-water bridge at the intersection revealed no structural damage.
He said a section of the road leading up to the bridge was, however, washed away.
“As part of the repair work, the road layer will be reconstructed and the road surface will be patched,” Mashigo stated.
“The repairs will take about two weeks to complete, but the start date cannot be given yet due to the road layers being highly saturated.”
The metro is also taking measures to address the street barriers that have been frequently removed by motorists, despite efforts by community policing forum (CPF) members to secure the area.
Mashigo stated that the yellow barriers will be filled with water on January 10 to prevent their removal.
“To prevent further damage during future flood events, the city plans to remove debris and tree trunks blocking the river bridge inlets before and during the rainy season.”
Ward 57 councillor David Farquharson recently highlighted the ongoing flooding of the intersection, including on New Year’s Eve and first day of the year.
“The road remains closed following the significant damage sustained in previous weeks,” he said.
Chairperson of the Wierdabrug Sector 1 CPF Daniël van Rooyen also expressed frustration over motorists who remove the barriers to continue accessing and using the road.
“Now we just need the barriers to be filled up with water or sand so that they can’t be easily removed from the road,” he added.
The metro has urged community members to co-operate by respecting the road closures, as unauthorised use of the compromised road could lead to further damage, personal injury or vehicle damage.
“It is not in anybody’s best interest to make use of a road that is compromised,” said Mashigo.
He added that there is a large number of bridges and river crossings in the city, making it important for motorists to respect road closures to avoid any further damage.
“The city sincerely apologises for the unexpected closure of the road and would like to thank road users for their anticipated compliance and patience during the shutting period,” he concluded.
