Ward 2 councillor calls for quality and compassion in food relief

Pretoria North Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer has expressed profound gratitude for the vital role food distributor groups are playing in providing for the community during challenging times.

As the economic and social impacts of the ongoing crises continue to take a toll on residents, food distributors have been at the forefront of relief efforts, offering essential support to those struggling to put food on the table.

Meyer pleaded for heightened awareness of the quality of the food being distributed.

Acknowledging the hard work of the distributors, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that the food provided to residents is not only sufficient in quantity but also nutritious, fresh, and unexpired.

According to Meyer, in times of need, people should not have to sacrifice their dignity for sustenance.

“I want to start by sincerely thanking each one of you for the incredible work you are doing.

“Your dedication and compassion in providing for our community during these difficult times are truly commendable, and I am deeply grateful for your efforts,” he said.

However, the councillor pointed out that with the great responsibility of feeding the community, comes the need to ensure that the quality of food reflects the care and respect for those being served.

“Every person we serve is an individual with their own story, struggles, and dignity. They deserve to receive food that reflects the respect and care we have for them,” stated Meyer.

He said this message comes as a reminder that providing food aid goes beyond simply meeting a physical need; it involves offering people a sense of value and worth, even during difficult times.

Meyer urged distributors to be particularly mindful of the condition of the food they distribute, advocating for fresh, healthy options that ensure recipients are not only fed but nourished.

The councillor’s plea also touched on the growing pressures that food distributors face.

With resources often stretched thin and demand for food relief increasing, distributors are doing their best to help as many people as possible.

Meyer acknowledged this, stating, “I know that times are tough for everyone, and the work you do is not easy.”

Despite these challenges, the councillor remains hopeful that distributors will continue to maintain high standards for the food they distribute.

“By providing food that is nutritious and fresh, distributors can help alleviate the sense of helplessness and frustration that many in the community may feel.

“We encourage the distributors to go the extra mile and ensure that the food they are distributing is truly worthy of the individuals they serve.”
