Tshwane welcomes third batch of firefighters

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department (ESD) welcomed its third batch of 98 firefighters at a recent passing-out parade at Lucas van den Berg sports field in Pretoria West.

“The training was rigorous and challenging, but our firefighters have demonstrated their commitment and perseverance,” Mnguni said.
He said the firefighters demonstrated their skills and joy during the parade, receiving certificates from dignitaries, including Tshwane Mayor dr Nasiphi Moya and Chief of Emergency Services, Moshema Mosia.
“The ESD will continue to conduct training and development for the firefighters to ensure they provide excellent service to the community.”
Mnguni said the department has been conducting the training and development of firefighters since the cessation of the erstwhile Emergency Medical Operations Division.
He added that the first group of 38 firefighters graduated on September 5, 2022, followed by a second group of 76 firefighters on September 23, 2024.
“The training programme includes courses such as Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Awareness Level, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations Level, and other specialised courses,” he said.
Mnguni added that these courses focus on both theoretical and practical applications of different skills and methods of rescue, firefighting, and handling of emergency situations.
He explained that they were trained to work as a team, remain calm under pressure, and provide emergency medical care.
Moya thanked Mosia and all the training officers and staff who worked tirelessly to prepare the graduating firefighters.
“We are proud of our firefighters, and we are confident that they will serve our community with dedication and professionalism,” Moya said.
She stressed that this was not just a graduation ceremony, “but a testament to the resilience, dedication, and courage that each of you embodies”.
Moya highlighted the critical role firefighters play in society.
“You are often the first line of defence in times of crisis, and your role extends far beyond extinguishing fires,” she said.
Moya said firefighters are called upon to save lives during floods, respond to hazardous material spills, assist in road accidents, and even play a critical role in public health emergencies.
“The City of Tshwane is committed to providing excellent emergency services to its residents, and the graduation of the third batch of firefighters is a significant milestone in achieving this goal.”

When reporting an emergency, residents are advised to remain calm, speak clearly, provide their correct address, and give their correct contact number to allow the operator to call them back if necessary.
