Ward councillor: Stop littering or face the music
The metro has announced that any person found to be dumping waste illegally in an unauthorised area is liable to a R5 000 fine.
Nellmapius residents have been encouraged to care more for their environment and stop throwing rubbish everywhere.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Mamelodi ward councillors got their hands dirty by taking part in the Rea Spana campaign in Nellmapius Ward 86.
The campaign was recently launched to accelerate service delivery through different interventions and it was joined by the EPWP team in picking up litter and the waste team in clearing the area of illegal dumping.
Ward councillor Kholofelo Kgopotso pleaded with Nellmapius residents to stop littering everywhere.
She said the campaign was a success and they were also joined by law enforcement.
“It is everyone’s responsibility to take care of their environment.
“Tshwane metro has announced that any person found dumping waste illegally in an unauthorised area is liable to a R5 000 fine.”
Kgopotso said if found dumping illegally, “we take your residential address and send it to Tshwane metro, where the fine will be issued”.
She added that residents should patiently wait for the metro waste management team to come and collect waste on Mondays “or rather the burn the dirt in your yard if Monday is too far”.
She said the programme was a success, as they also fixed streets lights in Alwyn Street and Nellmapius Road.
The waste team cleared the illegal dumpsite next to Vuku’enzele Primary School in Nellmapius Extension 3.
Tshwane Road maintenance also came on board to renew road markings and fix potholes.
Kgopotso further pleaded with residents when they protest to stop burning tyres on the roads because this damage the road surface and creates potholes.
“The taxi drivers will then refuse to drive on the roads with potholes because they damage their vehicles.”
Kgopotso said law enforcement agencies were able to shut down an illegal school that operated from an RDP house in Nellmapius.
She said the principal was also arrested.
The Rea Spana team will again meet at Solomon Mahlangu square next week Monday for a clean-up in Ward 38.
