Businesses grilled during Pretoria CBD by-law operation

Twenty four businesses received surprise inspection visits, leading to three undocumented persons arrests.

Businesses within the Pretoria CBD were hit hard with inspections and fines during the most recent Reclaim Our City operation.

The operation was led by Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya this week and was joined by The Tshwane Metro Police Department, South African Police Service, Home Affairs and the metro’s Health Department, Environment and Agriculture Management Department and Economic Development and Spatial Planning Department were part of the operation.

The Reclaim Our City is a weekly by-law enforcement operation to crack down on lawlessness and improve service delivery for residents.

This latest effort on February 5, saw 24 businesses receive surprise inspection visits, leading to three undocumented persons being arrested.

“The operation forms part of efforts to rid the inner city of criminal activity and protect residents from unsafe business practices. We had promised the public that we would be visible and Wednesday’s operation forms part of daily law enforcement operations conducted in Tshwane,” Moya said.

Here is a summary of the successes of the operation this week:

– 24 business premises were inspected

– Seven Section 56 notices were issued for Businesses Act, 1991 (Act 71 of 1991) contraventions (R24 500)

– One Section 56 notice was issued for Solid Waste By-law contravention (R5 000)

– One Section 56 notice was issued for Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972 (Act 54 of 1972) contravention (R2 500)

– Five contravention notices were issued to stop operations and close shops

– One contravention notice was issued by a role player for fire safety contravention

– Two contravention notices were issued for the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act 103 of 1977) contravention

– Two business premises were disconnected from the electricity supply

– Six business premises inspected were found with valid business licence permits

– Six business premises inspected were found with valid application documents for business licences

– Three suspects were arrested by the Department of Home Affairs for illegal immigration
