Ex traffic officer murder accused’s trial starts in May
Hlongwane is facing a charge of premeditated murder of his wife, as well as a charge of pointing a firearm and housebreaking with intent to murder.
The trial of a former Gauteng traffic officer accused of killing his wife is set to take place from May 5 to 16.
Zakhele Bennet Hlongwane (53) briefly appeared at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, February 17 for Legal Aid application and indictment.
Senior prosecutor, Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman, said the case of the accused has been transferred to the Pretoria High Court for trial.
“Hlongwane is facing a charge of premeditated murder of his wife, as well as a charge of pointing a firearm and housebreaking with intent to murder,” said Bendeman.
She added that the accused was denied bail on July 19 and remains in police custody.
On April 1, at around 05:00, the accused allegedly went to Tili Desire Ngobeni’s residence in Mamelodi.
On arrival, Hlongwane broke open the door and shot her multiple times in the presence of their five- and three-year-old children.
Ngobeni’s brother heard the gunshots, came outside to investigate, and the accused pointed a firearm at him.
An hour later, Hlongwane handed himself over to the Mamelodi police.
Hlongwane previously asked to be released on bail but was denied.
