Metro confirms 8m-deep sinkhole in Laudium, investigations still pending on Lyttelton hole
Rekord received reports of another sinkhole developing on the grounds of a school in Laudium on February 19.
Two holes have been uncovered in Tshwane this week, and officials have been sent in to investigate.
The metro is in the process of investigating a hole that formed on DF Malan Avenue in Lyttelton on February 18.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said a local ward councillor notified the Roads and Transport Department of the hole.
“The hole is currently 3m deep, approximately 16m long, and 8m wide,” he said.
He said that assessments are still ongoing to determine whether the hole can be classified as a sinkhole or road subsidence.
The metro has, however, taken precautionary measures by closing off the affected section of DF Malan Avenue to ensure public safety.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as this is a local street with surrounding roads available for detours.
While the metro continues to monitor and assess the situation, no definitive plan to address the issue has been announced.
“Monitoring and assessment of the developing feature are ongoing,” added Mashigo.
On February 19, Rekord received reports of a hole developing at a Laudium school.

Ward Councillor Naeem Patel confirmed that he was made aware of the hole and immediately alerted metro officials, who visited the site to assess the situation.
He emphasised that the area had been safeguarded to prevent further risks.
Mashigo said the investigation determined the hole was a sinkhole.
“The sinkhole is approximately 8m deep, and it was caused by internal stormwater drainage pounding against the boundary wall,” he said.
However, Mashigo clarified that the sinkhole is on private property, meaning that the metro’s role is limited to guidance rather than direct intervention.
“The school was advised on necessary interim measures,” he added.
Rekord has reached out and is awaiting feedback from the school.
