Arm wrestling comes to Centurion
Nearly 30 contestants participated in the qualifiers this past weekend. If they perform well against the people in the top 10, they can compete internationally.
It was the battle of the biceps this past Saturday at Jitterbugz Pub & Lounge when the Armdruk Is Groot qualifiers came around.
Armdruk Is Groot is an arm-wrestling pro league contest that gives these arm wrestlers the chance to compete on bigger stages.
On March 8, male and female arm wrestlers battled it out for a chance to compete at the league’s major tournament featuring the top 10 arm wrestlers in the league this July.
“An arm wrestle is gripping up with someone on a flat surface, whether it’s a kitchen table, or bar table or an arm-wrestling table and pushing down the arm of the opponent until their palm touches the surface of the other side,” explains the founder of Armdruk Is Groot, Francois Stip.
Stip says a total of 27 contestants, both men and women, participated in the qualifiers this week, with the top 3 women and top 5 men making it through to the July tournament.

Women’s category winners:
1st place – Alma du Plessis
2nd – Natashja Meintjies
3rd – Nataly Barbosa
Men’s category winners:
1st – Kobus Fourie
2nd – Leandro Cordier
3rd – Frederik Swanepoel
4th – Hein Luwes
5th- Ludwig Schnettler

Stip adds that should the qualifiers perform well against the top 10, they could compete internationally as well.
“If they can beat one of the guys in the top 10, they can then arm wrestle against Australian athletes. We’re in talks with Australia, inviting them here and we’re going to have a massive competition where we can show off our strength as South Africans against the rest of the world,” Stip said.
