Local dojo shines at National Championships with medal-winning performances

Competing against some of the country’s top talent, the Kiritsu athletes brought home five gold and three bronze medals.

Kiritsu Karate, one of Pretoria east’s promising dojos, has cemented itself as an outstanding centre following its performance at the Karate South Africa Bloemfontein League 1 Championships.

The event was held from April 11-13, where Kiritsu karatekas brought home an impressive haul of medals: five gold and three bronze medals.

The medal winners were:

– Ruhan van Rooy, who won bronze,
– Caileigh Joubert, who won a gold medal,
– Danae van Deventer, who won two bronze medals, and
– Sensei Justin du Plooy, Dian van Deventer, Connor Hartley and Kihan du Rand, who each won a gold medal.

The team was competing against the country’s top talent. Their medal tally is a testament to their hard work and discipline.

Under the expert leadership of Sensei Justin du Plooy, a 4th Dan black belt and certified instructor under the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF), the club has evolved into more than just a traditional karate dojo.

“Despite the intense environment, Kiritsu Karate students rose to the occasion, achieving remarkable results and bringing home a noteworthy collection of medals,” Du Plooy said.

He said their dedication to training and unwavering spirit were evident in their performances, marking a proud moment for the club and the local community.

“Beyond the accolades, the study of traditional Shotokan karate at Kiritsu Karate offers children invaluable life lessons and developmental benefits. Karate instils discipline, respect, focus, and self-confidence, empowering youngsters both on and off the tatami [woven straw mat].”

Kiritsu has become a hub for athletic development and personal growth in the Pretoria east region.

“Our results in Bloemfontein are a reflection of our students’ dedication and the holistic approach we take to training,” said Du Plooy.

“Karate isn’t just about kicking and punching. It’s about character development, discipline, and building resilience qualities that extend far beyond the dojo.”

He said the dojo’s recent success includes three silver medals and one gold in March, followed by a standout performance at the national league.

However, beyond the medals, Du Plooy emphasises the importance of values and life skills taught through karate.

“At Kiritsu, we believe in developing not just skilled athletes, but well-rounded individuals,” he explained.

“Children learn respect, perseverance, and confidence traits that benefit them at school, in their relationships, and later in their careers.”

The dojo has made a name for itself by fusing traditional Shotokan karate with modern training techniques.

It offers tailored strength and conditioning programmes, sports nutrition guidance, and video analysis of performance to help students reach their full potential.

Du Plooy is passionate about giving young people a safe, structured space to grow.

“We see so many kids today struggling with confidence or focus. Karate gives them something to hold on to: a routine, a goal, a sense of self,” he said.

“And when they step on to the tatami, they know they have earned their place,” he added.

Du Plooy remains committed to uplifting the Pretoria east community through quality martial arts education.

“We are proud of our victories, but our real success is measured in the lives we impact. Every medal is just a milestone, the real journey is shaping future leaders through karate.”
