Pretoria principal accused of brutal beatings

An investigation is underway after learners at Madisong High School in Pretoria accused the principal of brutal corporal punishment.

The Gauteng Department of Education has launched a full-scale investigation into serious allegations of corporal punishment at the Madisong High School in Hammanskraal, where the principal is accused of violently assaulting learners.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, is deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations.

“According to information at our disposal, some learners came forward detailing serious claims of physical assault by the Principal.

“One alleged to have been physically assaulted in February 2025. Another learner reported hand pain allegedly sustained after she was punished for missing a holiday catch-up programme.”

Mabona said the Department can confirm that an internal investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding these serious allegations.

He added that parents were also advised to open a case with the police.

Effectively, the Principal will precautionarily report to the District Office pending the outcome of this investigation.

“We are extremely disheartened by these reports and remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring schools are safe spaces for all learners. We remind all staff that corporal punishment is strictly prohibited by law, and any violation will be met with swift and decisive action,” said MEC Chiloane.

The Department runs continuous advocacy campaigns to reinforce the legal prohibition of corporal punishment across all schools.

Mabona said any educator accused of assault is subjected to a formal disciplinary process.

“In addition, the Department’s Education Support teams are available to provide emotional and psychosocial support to affected learners and their families.

“Learners and community members are encouraged to report any cases of abuse through various communication channels to their nearest District Office. The Department assures all learners that reported cases, anonymous or otherwise, are investigated thoroughly.”
