Maintenance work to be done on Daspoort Tunnel
The metro also plans to address lighting in the tunnel in the near future.
Motorists are advised that roadwork will be conducted on May 1 at the Daspoort Tunnel from 09:00 until completion.
Bremer Street between Deborah Street and Morkel Street will be closed during the maintenance period.
MMC for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, apologised for the inconvenience and appreciated residents’ patience as the work commences.
The work entails filling potholes, cleaning stormwater drains and other repairs.
Mogale said the work was trying but necessary.
She said the hot mix asphalt was produced by their own quarry.
“No external sources, no procurement processes, just a team of dedicated officials doing this work for the betterment of our city. One of the strategic moves we are making is to also provide and sell this asphalt to other municipalities and users,” Mogale said.
While responding to a social media comment, Mogale also said the metro has planned a deep cleaning and maintenance programme once the rainy season has ended.
Fixing the tunnel lights is also a project the team has planned for the future.
Ward 1 councillor Leon Kruyshaar said that the tunnel is synonymous with several issues and welcomed the work done by the metro.
Kruyshaar said the potholes cause serious accidents.
“We’ve had a car that’s rolled here, we’ve had a few minor incidents and some serious incidents. It’s nice to see the reaction of the public, they are happy to see us here.
“Some people are driving like lunatics, you won’t believe the speed some cars are travelling,” Kruyshaar added.
Motorists are advised to take precautionary measures and use alternative routes such as:
– Staatsartillerie Road
– Van der Hoff Road
– Eskia Mphahlele Drive
Tshwane Metro Police officers will be deployed to monitor the road closure and all affected streets.
