Montana reservoir maintenance nears completion, water clarity improving
The reservoir underwent a full cleaning cycle to restore water quality in the area.
The Tshwane metro has confirmed that the urgent cleaning operation of the Montana Reservoir in the north of Pretoria is set to conclude this Wednesday after a scheduled maintenance intervention began on May 12.
This comes in response to recent complaints from residents regarding water discolouration.
The reservoir underwent a full cleaning cycle to restore water quality in the area.
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said during the cleaning period, a bypass system was implemented to ensure an uninterrupted water supply to households and businesses.
Mashigo said water samples collected from various fire hydrants across Montana showed promising signs of improvements in water clarity.
He assured residents that the maintenance work will enhance the overall quality of water and reduce the risk of future contamination.
“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to restore optimal water quality,” said Mashigo.
Residents are encouraged to report any persistent water quality issues to the metro’s customer service channels.
The community previously raised frustrations after they opened their taps to find brown, murky water unsuitable for drinking, cooking, or basic hygiene.
“All we need is what we are dealing with. What is the contamination? This is not just about dirty water. We want to know whether the water is safe for human consumption.
“Tests should have been done the first day already. What if our lives are in danger? This could lead to the same problems that popped up in Hammanskraal, where people lost their lives,” said resident Susan Liebenberg.
Another resident, Deon Venter, said the discolouration of water in the area began over the weekend.
