Call for more manpower to clean illegal dumpsite
The purpose of cleaning around the school is to educate the public about taking care of their environment and for learners to learn in a healthy in environment.
A Mamelodi West community leader has appealed to residents, mostly those who live next to Umthombo Primary School, to participate in the next clean-up campaign around the school.
Peter Masanabo said the clean-up campaign started last Saturday, but they could not finish the job because of insufficient manpower.
Masanabo said the purpose of cleaning around the school is to educate the public about taking care of their environment and for learners to learn in a healthy environment.
“The school surroundings had overgrown grass, and in the first clean-up, we chased away snakes.”
Masanabo pleads with community members to join him and his fellow volunteers in their efforts to clean up an illegal dumping site next to Umthombo Primary School.
“I have noticed people have started dumping garbage illegally at the school fence at Umthombo Primary School, the grass has overgrown and is not safe for learners,” said Masanabo.
“We spread the message through street committee leaders in section A3 to invite members of the community to come with garden tools to help clean up the dirt surrounding the school.
“We can do more, as we desperately need more manpower to finish cleaning around the school premises.”
The next clean-up campaign will be on May 17 from 08:00.
He also pointed out that the increased number of people would help get the cleaning done quicker, and “we are planning to place ‘stop littering’ boards around the school”.
“We want our children to learn in a clean and healthy environment.
“We kept the school surroundings clean at all times, so we won’t have a problem with rodents and snakes.”
The clean-up will take place every three months. He said this, they hoped, would encourage other areas in Mamelodi to do the same to stop dumping next to school premises.
