Police college instructor rape case postponed
A senior police officer stationed at Tshwane Police Academy appeared in court on Wednesday for allegedly using his authority to take advantage of a female police trainee.
A court case of the 59-year-old police captain at the centre of a disturbing rape allegation has been postponed to May 23 for a bail application.
The accused appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on May 14.
The senior police officer who served 31 years in the SAPS is alleged to have used his authority to take advantage of a 20-year-old female police trainee.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, it is alleged that in April, the complainant walked past the accused without saluting him.
“The accused allegedly reprimanded her, accusing her of misconduct. The complainant explained that she had not seen him.”
She said that on May 6, the complainant was walking with her team to their cottage when the accused allegedly called her to his office.
“It is alleged that the accused then locked the door behind her and threatened her with dismissal for the earlier alleged misconduct of not saluting him if she did not sleep with him,” Mahanjana explained.
She said that the accused allegedly instructed the victim to half undress while he also half undressed and proceeded to rape her. He thereafter told her to get dressed and leave.
Mahanjana further relayed that the complainant reported the incident to authorities at the academy, who contacted police.
“The complainant was then taken for medical attention and referred to the Laudium Thuthuzela Care Centre for further assessment and support,” she said.
She added that the accused was arrested a day later, on May 7.
“Police then transferred the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigations,” Mahanjana emphasised.
