Three cable thieves caught trying to sell their loot in Pretoria West
Authorities received a tip-off about a suspect vehicle, which they followed to a scrapyard.
Three suspects, who thought they could make quick cash from stolen copper, were recently apprehended by Proshield Security and partnering agencies in Pretoria West.
On May 19, the agencies received a tip-off that a vehicle would be transporting stolen cables to a scrapyard for an illegal sale.
The teams involved in the bust included: Proshield Tactical Units, Proshield Undercover Units, SAPS Pretoria West Crime Prevention Unit (CPU), Bidvest Protea Coin Investigation Unit and CJN Telecommunications Investigation Unit.
According to a Proshield report, the teams surveyed and eventually intercepted the vehicle when the transaction occurred.
“The suspect vehicle was placed under surveillance. Teams tracked its movement until it reached a known location where the stolen cables were offloaded. Once the transaction was completed and the suspect vehicle departed the scene, tactical units, in co-ordination with SAPS, executed a precise and controlled takedown.
The stolen cables were found after a thorough search of the premises.
“Three suspects were positively identified and detained on-site,” the report read.
Proshield Security emphasised the need for effective collaboration with SAPS and supporting investigative units to secure the recovery of critical infrastructure and thanked all parties involved with the arrest.
