Hidden gems showcased to art lovers

Art lovers were treated to an exhibition at the In Shere Lifestyle Centre on Saturday.

Hosted by Discover Art, which is an offshoot of Discover Pretoria East, it provided a platform to bridge the gap between lesser-known artists and the public.

Co-founder Debbie Langley says exhibitions such as the one on June 28 support local artists, though they work with artists nationwide.

Attendees could view the work of several artists from noon to 19:00 and was treated to a free glass of wine or hot drink from Crawdaddys as well as the musical stylings of Brendon Ross.

“We were approached by two or three artists towards the end of last year, and they wanted to have their own websites but couldn’t afford them. So we decided to create a website where all the artists could display their art together. Each artist gets a business card with their own code, so people can scan and view their collection,” Langley says.

“It opens them up to the market,” she adds.

Discover Art collaborated with Earthen Space Fine Art Gallery for the exhibition.

Owner Carmen Hosten says they wanted to focus on newer, upcoming artists, and a select few would get the opportunity to showcase their work for the next three months.

“The art community is quite humble, especially when they’re upcoming. For them to be invited to exhibit permanently at a gallery, it’s a difficult thing for them to get into. It’s almost as if gallery owners are only looking for established names, and I get that, but for them, it’s about the exposure,” Hosten said.
