Sanral postpones N1 five-lane closure, plans to request weekend permit
Planned roadworks on the N1 Southbound won’t go ahead today.

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief as today’s planned five-lane closures near Rigel Avenue have been called off.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) postponed the scheduled works on the N1 Southbound for July 3 due to concerns over traffic disruption.
According to Sanral media relations manager Lwando Mahlasela, the agency has opted to reschedule today’s roadworks to reduce the impact on motorists.
“We have postponed today’s planned works due to the significant impact this was going to have on traffic,” said Mahlasela.
He further explained that Sanral is currently engaging with the provincial government to amend abnormal vehicle permits so that transportation and the installation of signage related to the roadworks can occur over weekends instead of weekdays.
He added that, if these discussions are successful, work on the highway will resume on weekends going forward.
“However, if the engagements do not yield a positive result, we will have to plan around that and ensure we give motorists enough warning of the pending closures,” he said.
This update comes after motorists in Pretoria were advised earlier this week of full and partial closures on the N1 South due to construction work.
On Wednesday, the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) confirmed the full closure of the N1 South at Lynnwood Road from 09:00 to 15:00, with all traffic that was diverted to the Lynnwood off-ramp during the construction period.
Another closure had initially been set for today, with five lanes scheduled to be closed about 600m before Rigel Avenue between 09:00 and 15:00, leaving only the left emergency lane open to traffic.
