Repeat substation vandalism sparks outrage in Ward 2

Residents have expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the metro’s failure to install permanent security, despite repeated calls to do so, as well as previous incidents.

Frustration is mounting in Ward 2 after yet another break-in at the Van Riebeeck substation on June 30 plunged large parts of the area into darkness.

Koos de la Rey Street and the surrounding neighbourhood have been left without power following the latest act of vandalism.
It is the latest in a string of incidents that residents said could have been prevented if proper security measures had been in place.

Councillor Quentin Meyer confirmed that criminals gained access to the substation over the weekend, causing severe damage and interrupting the power supply to several residential blocks and businesses.

Residents have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the metro’s failure to install permanent security, despite repeated calls and earlier incidents.

“This is now beyond unacceptable. We have reported these break-ins multiple times, and every time we are promised better security, but nothing happens. Our food is spoiling, small businesses are losing money, and it’s unsafe to be in the dark every other week,” said Peter du Toit.

The substation has become a frequent target for cable thieves and vandals.

Without guards, cameras or perimeter reinforcements, it remains highly vulnerable – a fact that residents believe the municipality has ignored for too long.

Meyer questioned how many more times residents must suffer before the metro takes the matter seriously.

“This is preventable. The community is tired of empty promises. It’s time for urgent action and accountability,” he said.

Mpho Nkadimeng said these break-ins are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern of neglect.

Nkadimeng believes the metro has failed to prioritise maintenance and infrastructure protection in their area.

“This isn’t just about power, it’s about safety and dignity. We are being left behind. Other areas get mobile security and rapid response.”

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the power outages were due to a vandalised substation.

“A portion of Pretoria North has been affected. A team has been assigned to attend the outage.” He said an estimated repair time was not yet available.
