Local cyclist to pedal from Eersterust to the Northern Cape

Renee Kruger (47) shares that he will be embarking on the 900km bicycle journey to inspire hope and uplift communities.

An Eersterust cyclist is turning his hobby into a force for good in his community as he begins a ride from Eersterust to the Northern Cape.

Renee Kruger (47), who will begin his 900km ride on July 11, said he is taking this journey to inspire the communities along his route.

Kruger, who began cycling three years ago, says, “I did musical therapy at a school for children and people living with disabilities. When I met with them, I could tell that they wanted to ride on my bicycle, but, unfortunately, some of them can’t use their hands and legs.”

He states those encounters motivated him to ride for their sake. “Through riding my bike around the community, I was able to understand the difficulties of life that people face.”

Kruger expressed that the experience has encouraged him to continue cycling and bring a message of hope to others.

“Riding a bike represents perseverance, pushing through discomfort, and ultimately reaching your destination.

“When I am cycling, I always hope that this is the message that is conveyed to the people that I come across out there.”

Kruger shared that throughout his cycling journey, he felt the need to start a foundation that would support the positive things that can happen in communities around the country.

He believes that the people he met while out cycling showed him how many different situations people can find themselves in. This became a calling for him to act within his community, and led to the founding of the Colourful Gifts Foundation.

He emphasises, “God gave me the strength to cycle for the disabled, and from that experience, I have found many other opportunities to make a difference in other people’s lives.

“It is important to empower and uplift communities, especially young people. There are many people who have loads of talent but lack the necessary support structures.

“The foundation focuses on highlighting stories in the community, reminding people that hope and transformation are always possible.”

According to Kruger, inspiring people is not always an easy ride, but the rewards far outweigh the difficulties.

He says at each stop, he hopes to engage with local residents and share messages of hope, resilience and positive action.

He adds that his heartfelt initiative is more than just a personal challenge. “It is a mission-driven campaign aimed at encouraging and uplifting youth and communities along the route.”
