Attempted hijacking foiled after police chase in Centurion
One suspect was caught after a high-speed chase, while the second suspect remains at large.
A suspect has been arrested following a high-speed chase that ended at a Centurion petrol station on July 29.
Police spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, said the incident occurred at 17:50, during a police operation targeting theft from motor vehicles.
“Officers spotted a suspicious vehicle with false registration plates on Olievenhoutbosch Road in Highveld,” he said.
When police tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled, leading to a high-speed chase.
“As police approached the vehicle, shots were exchanged, and the suspects sped off,” said Van Dyk.
He added that the chase ended at the Engen Garage on Olievenhoutbosch Road, where one suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle and attempted to hijack a parked car.
Police officers caught the suspect at the scene with assistance from members of the public.
Van Dyk added that the second suspect escaped in the vehicle and remains at large.
“The arrested suspect has been linked to the crime through video footage.”
No injuries or damage to private property were reported. Police are continuing to investigate the matter.
