Three caught in Mabopane Facebook Marketplace robbery crackdown

The suspects were also linked to a recent hijacking case, when cellphones belonging to the victim were found in their possession.

A co-ordinated police operation following a string of Facebook Marketplace-related robberies has led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property in Mabopane.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on criminals who lure unsuspecting victims through online marketplaces.

“Members of Mabopane SAPS and Soshanguve SAPS were conducting follow-up operations based on information received regarding a carjacking that had occurred in Soshanguve and was reported in Mabopane,” said Van Dyk.

During the track-and-trace operation, officers identified and stopped a Toyota Quantum travelling with three occupants. The vehicle was searched, along with the suspects.

“During the search, members discovered a firearm concealed in the waistband of one of the passengers,” confirmed Van Dyk.

The firearm was identified as a Taurus pistol with its serial number filed off, raising suspicions that it may have been used in previous crimes.

Police also recovered a magazine and six rounds of ammunition.

Further investigation linked the suspects to a recent hijacking case after officers discovered cellphones belonging to the victim in the possession of the other occupants.

“The firearm, together with a magazine and six rounds of ammunition, was confiscated,” said Van Dyk.

The recovered items were confiscated as evidence, while the firearm will undergo forensic testing to determine whether it has been used in other criminal incidents.

The arrests are believed to be connected to a broader pattern of robberies in which suspects allegedly use Facebook Marketplace to lure victims in under the guise of buying or selling goods, only to rob or hijack them upon meeting.

Police have indicated that investigations to establish whether the suspects may be linked to additional cases in Soshanguve, Mabopane and surrounding areas are ongoing.

“The firearm will be subjected to further forensic analysis to determine whether it may have been used in the commission of other crimes. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects may be linked to other criminal activities in the area,” added Van Dyk.

Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, praised the officers involved in the operation for their swift response and commitment to tackling crime.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when arranging meetings through online marketplaces and to prioritise safety by meeting in public spaces or safe places, such as police stations.

The three suspects are expected to face charges related to armed robbery, carjacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.
