Pedestrian access restricted on Monument Avenue due to sinkhole
A long-standing sinkhole keeps parts of the road restricted, with limited pedestrian access and safety concerns persisting.
Residents of Monument Avenue in Lyttelton Manor are advised to exercise caution when navigating the area, as access to parts of the road remains restricted due to a persistent sinkhole.
Pedestrians are now permitted access only between designated points and during daytime hours, from 06:00 to 18:00. This measure aims to balance safety with convenience.
Freedom Front Plus Councillor Wesley Jacobs confirmed that road closure signage and detour signs were first erected in September 2023, with additional signage scheduled for maintenance in March.
“The fenced-off area along the road, which has been in place since 2023, forms part of the city’s ongoing efforts to safeguard residents from risks associated with the sinkhole and its surrounding environment,” he said.
Jacobs explained that, prior to the implementation of these measures, pedestrians had full access to Monument Avenue, although vehicle access has been restricted since September 2023.
He noted that the current restrictions primarily target pedestrians to address safety and convenience during peak hours.
“Access will be allowed between 06:00 and 18:00 for daily commuting, while evening limitations aim to mitigate concerns raised by residents living near the affected stretch.”

Safety issues identified by the community include theft, break-ins, robberies, illicit drug trade, gangsterism, violence, and the presence of trolley pushers.
Jacobs emphasised that this arrangement is a temporary solution, remaining in place until the city can rehabilitate the sinkhole once sufficient funding is allocated.
He added that discussions between the Tshwane metro and the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) are ongoing regarding financial support to address the sinkhole crisis in Centurion.
Alternative routes and detour signs have also been in place since 2023 to assist both pedestrians and motorists.
“Residents travelling to Monument Avenue South are encouraged to use Selborne Avenue, while those heading to Monument Avenue North can navigate via Langebrink Road, Selborne Avenue, and Cantonments Road,” added Jacobs.
He reassured the public that the signage and fencing provided by the city are sufficient to secure the sinkhole area.
The safety of pedestrians and nearby residents is further supported by the TMPD, the SAPS, private security companies, and the local CPF.

Jacobs emphasised that he is continuously engaging with relevant municipal departments to resolve the ongoing sinkhole situation and address the broader issue of dilapidated infrastructure in the area, which has been causing unsuitable living conditions for residents.
Until rehabilitation is possible, Jacobs urged pedestrians and the wider community to comply with access restrictions to ensure their safety.
